Dining Room Transformation Using Board and Batten Walls and Wallpaper

When it comes to decorating a room in your home, there are countless options for colour schemes to choose from and sometimes, the choice can be a little overwhelming.

Of all the rooms in our home, the dining room offers perhaps the most flexibility to experiment with texture and tone and use dark, rich colours to create a real atmosphere.

This dining room makeover uses our The English Garden wallpaper and board and batten walls to create a modern traditional space that's perfect for its country setting.

First up, a board and batten wall was created down one side of the room. While panels can be bought ready-made from hardware stores, this one was simply constructed from lengths of pine fastened to the walls. The gap between the boards was left as plasterboard.

Hand painting the board and batten section of the wall helps give the impression of a fully-custom timber panel (as opposed to rollering, which looks more like plasterboard).

On the other side of the room, the wall beside the table was given some serious drama with our The English Garden wallpaper.

We used a pre-pasted application, but a peel and stick application will give the same results (but can be removed later).

We'll be covering off how to install pre-pasted wallpaper in a separate post.

The finished results for this space are comforting and traditional, and create a sense of drama in a space that was formerly light and bland.

A few more pros of using dark colours in your dining room:

  • If you're considering adding a dark colour to your dining room, deep navy blues, rich emerald greens, and moody charcoal greys can all add a sense of depth and richness to a space that lighter colours simply can't match.
  • Dark colours can help to make a large room feel more cozy and inviting, which is especially important in a space that's meant for entertaining and gathering.
  • Additionally, dark colours can help to create a sense of intimacy by making the space feel more enclosed and cocoon-like.
  • A dark colour scheme can provide a neutral base that allows other colours, textures, and materials to stand out. For example, a dark wall colour can make artwork, lighting, and furniture pop and create a sense of contrast and interest.
  • Dark colours can also be used to complement different design styles, from traditional to modern, making them a versatile choice for a variety of homes.
